Guest Article: From a Work Ute to a Home Workshop

Recently, one of our customers, Marty, sent through some photos of his finished garage setup. We liked what we saw enough to ask for more, so we got in touch to find out the story behind it.

Marty spent his working life as a tradesman, running everything out of a utility vehicle. When he retired, the ute went, but the tools stayed. What he needed next was somewhere to put them.

"I am a retired tradesman who operated out of a utility vehicle and so on retirement I needed storage for my tools."

Marty found Just Pro Tools online, but it was the showroom visit that made the decision easy.

"We came across JPT online, but the thing we liked was that you could visit a showroom and see everything set up and working. This made it easier for me to realise how it would work in our garage/man cave."

The setup

Marty built his garage around three main pieces from the Maxim range. None of them are locked to a single configuration, which is part of the point of the range: start with the piece that covers your main need, then add cabinets, benches, or extensions as space, budget, or the job in front of you calls for it.

Maxim 8 Piece Garage Storage System & Mounting Kit: A 72" timber top workbench, two 4-drawer roll cabinets, three 1-door wall cabinets, a steel peg board with peg kit, and a mounting frame kit so the whole thing wall-mounts without needing to find studs. Overall footprint: 2300mm (H) x 1830mm (W) x 630mm (D).

This is the anchor of the setup, it covers bench space, drawer storage, enclosed cabinet space, and wall storage in a single kit, which is why it works as a starting point rather than something you build toward.

Super Size Upright Cabinet & Extension: He added on for extra enclosed storage. The upright cabinet stands 1840mm (H) x 1220mm (W) x 460mm (D), with a 475mm extension on top for additional height.

The Maxim range shares the same footprint and mounting logic across pieces, an upright cabinet like this slots in alongside the original kit rather than needing a separate setup or layout rethink.

48" Adjustable Height Workbench: A second, standalone bench with a 38mm benchtop that adjusts across 9 heights between 725mm and 1065mm, rated to 250kg.

Marty used this as an extra work surface separate from the main workbench, which is the kind of addition the modular system is built for: cover the essentials first, then add a second bench, extra cabinet, or organiser once you know what your workshop actually needs day to day.

Putting it together

Across the Maxim heavy duty storage range all the products are flat-packed with the tools and instructions included, this includes cabinets and workbenches, so assembly is on you. Marty put the whole setup together himself, his approach was simple:

"Follow the instructions. A table, or as I did, use a sheet of plywood on a couple of trestles. This makes a good assembly workbench."

The result speaks for itself.

"The whole setup looks great and seems to work well at home in our garage."
